Dual Enrollment

Dual credit can be earned in 10th and 11th grade math courses and 12th grade Humane Letters through Southeastern University. Great Hearts students must have a 3.0 unweighted cumulative or higher GPA to participate.

Dual credit for 10th and 12th grade language courses can be earned through Arizona Christian University each semester. Great Hearts students must have a 2.5 unweighted cumulative or higher GPA to participate.

Please note that grades earned through dual credit become part of the student’s permanent college record/transcript. It is the responsibility of the student to research and determine how their dual credits may or may not transfer to their future 4-year college or university.

After registration is complete and paid on Configio, NO REFUNDS will be issued. If you have questions about which option is best for you, please consult with your Great Hearts college counselor before purchasing.

Q. What is Dual Enrollment?

A.

Dual enrollment offers students the opportunity to earn college credit from the high school courses they are already taking at their Great Hearts academy. Each dual enrollment course is taught by the student’s regular Great Hearts teacher.

Q. What are the benefits of dual enrollment credit?

A.

The main benefit of Dual Enrollment credit is the ability for students to enroll in more advanced courses or courses more aligned to their personal interests at the college level sooner. Students who have sufficient credits, including those acquired from dual enrollment, and CLEP or AP tests, may be able to even graduate in fewer semesters. Ultimately, students and families should work closely with their college counselor to understand exactly what the benefits will be for them given their college and career aspirations.

Q. Once Dual Enrollment is offered for a course at GH, how will that change the course?

A.

The curriculum and instruction for that course will remain the same. The University partners we have selected have been selected for precisely this purpose, that we can continue to offer this excellent education without modification.

Q. Which colleges is Great Hearts partnering with?

A.

Great Hearts Arizona is partnering with Arizona Christian University (ACU) and Southeastern University (SEU) to offer a variety of dual enrollment courses for the 2024-2025 school year.

Q. What dual enrollment courses will be offered?

A.

In 2024-25, Great Hearts Arizona academies will offer Dual Enrollment opportunities in the following courses:
• Algebra II/Precalculus (Grade 10)
• Latin V (Grade 10)
• Calculus I (Grade 11)
• Humane Letters IV (Grade 12)
• Spanish IV (Grade 12)
• French IV (Grade 12)
• Greek II (Grade 12)

Q. Will Great Hearts be offering more dual enrollment courses in the future?

A.

Yes! We have chosen a small selection to start to ensure that the offerings we make available are of the highest quality. As we work with our college partners, we will be creating opportunities with them that align to our curriculum, so that students can receive college credit while also having the rich educational experience they currently receive.

Q. What are the college course equivalencies for the current high school course offerings?

A.

Each dual enrolled student will receive both high school AND college credit for their high school course. The following table lists these college course equivalencies.

Q. What colleges do these credits transfer to?

A.

Although these credits will be earned through SEU or ACU, they can be transferred to many other schools, including our three largest in-state universities, ASU, UA, and NAU.

It is the student's responsibility to research and determine how their dual enrollment credits may transfer to their future 4-year college or university. If a dual enrollment course is transferrable to ASU that will supersede a student’s score on the math placement assessment once the official transcript is received from SEU or ACU.

Q. Will Dual Enrollment require additional work of students?

A.

No. Students will engage in the same lessons and complete the same work as their peers who are not enrolled for any given course.

Q. Will those who register for Dual Enrollment for a course be put into a separate class?

A.

No. Students enrolled/not enrolled in dual enrollment will be in the same class.

Q. What support is in place to assist my student with their dual enrollment course?

A.

From the point of view of the student experience, dual enrollment functions the same as normal enrollment in their high school classes. Thus, the support that exists will be the same as the support for their regular classes.

In addition, for those courses offered through SEU, there will be information available on the SEU class platform that gives updates about the course, and there will be opportunities for students to meet virtually with the Great Hearts lead teacher during that teacher’s office hours.

Q. Are students with a 504 or IEP eligible for dual enrollment?

A.

Yes, the only requirement to be eligible for dual enrollment is the GPA requirement: Students must maintain an unweighted GPA of 3.0 to enroll in any course offered with SEU and an unweighted GPA of 2.5 to enroll in any course with ACU. These GPA calculations consider all high school work completed by the student prior to the semester they enroll in a dual enrollment course.

Q. How is my college grade determined?

A.

The grade you receive for your high school class with be the same as the grade on the college transcript.

Q. What if I don’t get a good grade?

A.

The grades earned in a dual enrollment course are a permanent record. For this reason, students should only enroll in dual credit if they understand the risk that comes with potentially getting a poor grade.

Q. How do I send my dual enrollment grade to my future college or university?

A.

Transcripts can be ordered from Southeastern University at https://seu.edu/academics/registrar/

Transcripts can be ordered from Arizona Christian University at https://www.arizonachristian.edu/registrar/transcript/

Q. Are there any conditions which must be met to be eligible to enroll?

A.

Students must maintain an unweighted GPA of 3.0 to enroll in any course offered with SEU and an unweighted GPA of 2.5 to enroll in any course with ACU. These GPA calculations consider all high school work completed by the student prior to the semester they enroll in a dual enrollment course.

Q. When is the registration deadline?

A.

The registration deadline is August 14, 2024, for first semester courses. For second semester courses, the registration deadline is midnight, January 13, 2025.

Q. What is the cost to take a dual enrollment class?

A.

The cost is $300 for 3 credit courses and $385 for 4 credit courses. Students enrolled for college credits are responsible for payment through their Configio account.

Q. What happens if I want to drop a dual credit course?

A.

Great Hearts expects students to thoroughly explore the pros and cons of dual enrollment prior to enrolling in dual enrollment courses. Students enrolled in dual enrollment courses that are reflected on their GH schedule are expected to remain in their dual credit courses throughout the school year and/or semester, whichever applies. Requests to drop courses will be considered on a case-by-case review. Students who are approved to drop courses must follow ACU or SEU drop policy.

Q. Is the dual fee refundable?

A.

After registration is complete and paid on Configio, no refunds will be issued. If you have questions about which option is best for you, please consult with your Great Hearts college counselor before purchasing.

Q. Are there other ways to earn college credit before college?

A.

Yes! There are two offered by Great Hearts, CLEP testing and AP testing.

Q. How is Dual Enrollment different from AP (Advanced Placement)?

A.

When students enroll in a dual enrollment course, they are staying on their GH home campus with instruction provided by a Great Hearts teacher who is qualified through the selected colleges to provide both high school and college instruction.

At the end of an AP class, students who choose to do so take an AP exam. The results of this exam may allow students to “test out” of certain courses in their degree program. Please keep in mind that each college and university accept AP classes differently, so you will want to discuss potential outcomes with your admissions counselor at your preferred post-secondary institution(s).

Q. If I need more information, who should I contact?

A.

The college counselor at your academy or our Regional Director of College Counseling, Roslyn Fletcher (roslyn.fletcher@greathearts.org).
