Kindergarteners Celebrate Arizona’s Birthday

Archway Glendale February 14, 2023 -

Students celebrating Arizona's BirthdayThe kindergarten classes at Archway Classical Academy Glendale celebrated Arizona’s birthday in true pioneer fashion.  Kindergarteners dressed up in their finest southwest cowboy and cowgirl gear as they participated in some fun pioneer activities while learning more about the great state that they live in.

Student celebrating Arizona's BirthdayArizona became the 48th state in the union on February 14th, 1912. Students learned about Arizona’s 5 C’s, which areCopper, Cotton, Citrus, Cattle, and Climate.  You may not be familiar with the 5 C’s of Arizona unless you have lived here a while, but these young scholars, clad in cowboy hats, learned about each component.  The day included crafts and activities that demonstrated all that they have been learning about the Grand Canyon State such as the state flower, tree, and bird. They were also able tell us what colors are found on the state flag.

“I think it’s a fun way for them to realize that February 14th isn’t just Valentine’s Day – it’s also the birth of our state. It’s a big deal to celebrate Arizona and they’re having a lot of fun diving into that culture,” said Kindergarten Teacher Sara Strand. “We’re going to have lots of different activities. Right now, they’re coloring their Arizona packet and we’re going to read in their Arizona book about coyotes, and when we get back from recess, we’re going to have our craft where they’re going to make a cactus out of their hands.” Strangely enough, neither cactus nor coyote is included in Arizona’s 5 C’s.

Arizona FlagParent volunteers helped put together an “authentic” cowboy snack picnic complete with cornbread, chips, and apples.  The snack was served to the students sitting on a picnic blanket spread on the ground. The picnic was originally set to take place outside but was moved indoors due to the out-of-character rain in Arizona today.

Teacher being interviewedThe classrooms were bustling with special activities all day long. The celebration even caught the attention of local television news media whose interests were sparked by young students who were learning and celebrating the history of the Copper State. Kylee Cruz from Good Morning Arizona and Desiree Fluellen from Fox 10’s Arizona Morning show came to visit and report live from the classrooms. Students were eager to share what they had been learning.

Happy 111th Birthday to you, Arizona!
